TREES & MOORLAND

Planting new trees in Harrogate District will have some positive effect on our ability to capture carbon and may help us to stick within our carbon budget in the longer term. However, the main cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels. Therefore, it is essential to vastly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Tree planting is necessary and helpful, but it cannot compensate for our current emissions from travel, heat or industrial processes.

Upland moors in Nidderdale can store carbon and slow the force of water to homes and businesses in the valleys below. Ongoing moorland management is necessary to restore degraded peat.

Many organisations are working in several collaborative arrangements to improve natural carbon capture and storage in Harrogate District. For example, Harrogate Borough Council, Nidderdale AONB, White Rose Forest and Yorkshire Peat Partnership.
